Rules for Base Game and 5-6 Player Game:
Setup
For the base game, remove the desert and one each of sheep, wood and wheat. For 5-6 players, remove both deserts and one each of wood and wheat. Place the four diamond mine hexes on the extremities of the island (See back for base game and 5-6 player examples). Place 5 diamonds on each diamond mine. Place the remaining 10 diamonds beside the board to form the general supply.
Starting settlements may NOT be placed on a diamond mine.
Diamond Mining
When a player builds a settlement on a mine, they immediately take 1 diamond from the mine’s supply.
Whenever the mine’s numbers are rolled, players with a settlement or city on that mine receive 1 diamond. No additional diamonds are provided for cities.
If the mine does not contain enough diamonds for every eligible player, distribute its remaining diamonds first, then distribute any additional diamonds owed from the general supply. If the general supply does not contain enough supply, no diamonds are distributed and the game ends.
Diamonds are not resource cards and do not count toward a player’s hand limit nor may they be stolen by the robber.
Every 2 diamonds are worth 1 victory point. Round down when a player has an odd number of diamonds.
Ending the Game
The game ends immediately when either of the following occurs:
- A player reaches 14 victory points during their own turn. That player wins.
- The general supply of diamonds is exhausted (even if diamonds are still available on remaining mine hexes). In this case, the player with the most victory points wins.
- Two diamond mines are fully exhausted. In this case, the player with the most victory points wins.
If two or more players are tied for the most victory points, the tied player with the most diamonds wins.
Rules for Seafarers:
Setup
Create the map using the four diamond mine hexes as separate islands (See back for an example). These islands may be reached only by ship. Place 5 diamonds on each diamond mine. Place the remaining 10 diamonds beside the board to form the general supply.
General Rules
All rules from the base game and Seafarers apply, except where modified below.
Diamond Mining
When a player completes a sea route connecting one of their coastal settlements or cities to a diamond mine, they establish a trading route with that mine. The player immediately takes 1 diamond from the mine’s supply.
For the rest of the game, whenever the mine’s numbers are rolled, each player with a trading route to that mine receives 1 diamond.
If the mine does not contain enough diamonds for every eligible player, distribute its remaining diamonds first, then distribute any additional diamonds owed from the general supply. If the general supply does not contain enough supply, then no diamonds are distributed and the game ends.
Players may not build settlements or cities on island village locations.
Diamonds are not resource cards and do not count toward a player’s hand limit when a 7 is rolled.
Every 2 diamonds are worth 1 victory point. Round down when a player has an odd number of diamonds. For example:
- 1 diamond = 0 victory points
- 2 diamonds = 1 victory point
- 3 diamonds = 1 victory point
- 4 diamonds = 2 victory points
Placing and Moving Ships
The final ship in an open sea route may be moved according to the standard Seafarers rules.
A trading route connecting a mine to one of the player’s coastal settlements or cities is considered a closed route. Ships that form part of a closed route may not be moved.
Players may extend a closed route. This means a single route may eventually connect multiple mines.
A player may also begin a new route from any available intersection along an existing route, following the normal building rules.
When a 7 Is Rolled
The standard Seafarers rules apply, with the following changes.
Robber
The robber may be moved only after at least one player has 3 or more victory points. When the robber is moved, use the normal rules for stealing a random resource card from an affected player. Diamonds may not be stolen.
Pirate
A player may move the pirate only if they have at least one closed trading route to a mine. After moving the pirate, the player may steal either:
- 1 random resource card; or
- 1 diamond.
The victim must have a ship or trading route next to the pirate ship.
Longest Road/Route and Largest Army
The Longest Road/Route card is not used in this scenario.
The Largest Army card may still be used when playing with the base game’s development cards.
Trading and Building
Players may trade and build only during their own turns, following the normal rules.
Ending the Game
The game ends immediately when either of the following occurs:
- A player reaches 14 victory points during their own turn. That player wins.
- The general supply of diamonds is exhausted (even if diamonds are still available on remaining mine hexes). In this case, the player with the most victory points wins.
-
Two diamond mines are fully exhausted. In this case, the player with the most victory points wins.
If two or more players are tied for the most victory points, the tied player with the most diamonds wins.
